Embark on an adventure to Waqrapukara, an impressive Inca fortress perched high on a cliff, surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of the Apurímac River Canyon. Its name means “Horned Fortress” in Quechua, referring to the two striking rock formations that flank it and give it its unique appearance. This one-day tour combines history, archaeology, and a hike through remote Andean landscapes — perfect for travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path routes.

Our day begins early, around 4:00 a.m., with pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. We head south along the Cusco–Puno highway, passing through the town of Sicuani before reaching Cusipata, where we enjoy a hearty breakfast to fuel our hike.
We then continue by vehicle to Punta Carretera, the starting point of our trek. From here, we begin with a gentle descent, followed by rolling trails through landscapes featuring rock formations, canyons, and high-Andean flora. Along the way, our guide will share insights into the history and culture of the region.
After approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes of hiking, we arrive at the Waqrapukara archaeological complex (4,300 m / 14,107 ft). Here, we have time to explore its stone enclosures, terraces, and natural viewpoints — and, of course, admire the iconic “horned” formation that makes this site unique.
Following the guided tour and photo time, we return via the same trail to our transport. Back in Cusipata, a comforting lunch awaits before we begin our drive back to Cusco, arriving around 6:30 p.m.
