Looking for a colorful mountain adventure with less crowds and less hiking than Vinicunca? The Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain tour is your perfect alternative. Located in the same stunning mountain range as the more famous Rainbow Mountain, Palcoyo offers not just one, but three rainbow-colored mountains along with incredible panoramic views of the Red Valley and the snowcapped Ausangate. This full-day tour is ideal for travelers seeking natural beauty, unique photo opportunities, and a gentler trekking experience in the high Andes.

The day begins with hotel pick-up in Cusco between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. From there, we drive south through the Andean countryside, passing small villages and beautiful landscapes, until we reach the district of Combapata. We make a brief stop for a traditional Andean breakfast before continuing to the trailhead at about 4,800 meters above sea level. Unlike the challenging hike to Vinicunca, the walk to Palcoyo is much easier and takes only around 45 minutes on mostly flat terrain. Along the way, you’ll see three rainbow mountains, naturally colored by mineral deposits, and have plenty of time to enjoy the silence, take photos, and admire the surrounding Red Valley. For those who wish, there’s an optional short hike to a stone forest viewpoint, offering breathtaking views of the entire Ausangate range. After exploring the area, we return to the vehicle and head back to Combapata for a buffet lunch. Arrival back in Cusco is around 5:00–5:30 p.m.

Palcoyo is a great choice for those who want to experience Peru’s rainbow mountains without the strenuous hike required for Vinicunca. It’s also a good option for families or travelers still adjusting to altitude. Be sure to acclimate in Cusco for at least 1 day before the tour, and dress warmly — it can be chilly even when the sun is out. The trail is not difficult, but due to the elevation (above 4,800 meters), it’s important to stay hydrated and take your time walking.
