Take the road less traveled with this epic 5-day trek to Choquequirao, the “Sacred Sister of Machu Picchu.” This route immerses you in remote Andean landscapes, breathtaking canyons, and ancient Inca history — with far fewer crowds than other trails. Over five days, you’ll hike through rugged mountains, sleep under the stars, and explore one of the most spectacular yet hidden archaeological sites in Peru. A perfect choice for adventurous hikers looking for authenticity, solitude, and connection with nature.

Day 1: Cusco – Capuliyoc – Chiquisca
We pick you up from your hotel around 5:00 a.m. and drive to Capuliyoc (2,900 m), the trailhead with panoramic views of the Apurímac Canyon and snowcapped peaks. After meeting your trekking team and enjoying breakfast, we begin the hike with a steady descent to the Apurímac River, passing through semi-tropical landscapes. We camp at Chiquisca (1,900 m), a warm, lush spot near the river. Meals included: lunch and dinner.
Day 2: Chiquisca – Marampata – Choquequirao Basecamp
After breakfast, we begin a steep morning ascent to Marampata, a small farming community with incredible views of the surrounding mountains. From here, the hike becomes easier and more scenic as we approach the Choquequirao archaeological site. We camp near the complex, with time to rest and enjoy the peaceful setting. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 3: Full Exploration of Choquequirao
Today is dedicated to exploring Choquequirao, a massive Inca city still being unearthed by archaeologists. With fewer visitors and a more wild setting than Machu Picchu, you’ll feel like you’re discovering it yourself. Your guide will show you the main temples, agricultural terraces, ritual platforms, and the famous llama carvings made from white stone. In the afternoon, you can rest or do a short optional hike to hidden sectors of the site. We camp nearby for a second night. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 4: Choquequirao – Chiquisca
After breakfast, we begin our return hike. First, we retrace the route to Marampata and then descend back down to the Apurímac River, crossing the suspension bridge and hiking back up to Chiquisca, where we’ll spend our last night camping. This is a great moment to reflect and enjoy your last full night in the mountains. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 5: Chiquisca – Capuliyoc – Cusco
Our final morning begins with a moderate uphill hike back to Capuliyoc, where our private transport will be waiting. After a final group meal along the way, we return to Cusco, arriving around 5:00–6:00 p.m. Meals included: breakfast, lunch.

This trek is physically demanding and best suited for experienced hikers or fit travelers. Expect long days with steep ascents and descents. We recommend acclimatizing in Cusco for at least 2 days before the trek. The best season is from May to October, when the weather is drier and the views are clearest. Unlike Machu Picchu, no permit quotas are required — but that means fewer people and a more intimate experience. Prepare well and bring your spirit of adventure!
