The Ausangate Trek is one of the most beautiful and remote high-altitude hikes in Peru. Far from the crowds, this 5-day expedition offers stunning landscapes filled with glaciers, turquoise lakes, hot springs, herds of alpacas, and towering snow-capped peaks — including Ausangate Mountain, the highest in the Cusco region (6,384 m / 20,945 ft). This route is ideal for seasoned hikers who want a deep connection with nature, Andean spirituality, and dramatic scenery in every direction.

Day 1: Cusco – Tinki – Upis
Early morning pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. We drive to Tinki, a small town and starting point of the trek. After meeting the muleteers and loading gear, we begin hiking towards Upis, a high Andean community with views of Ausangate. Upon arrival, you’ll have the chance to relax in the natural hot springs before dinner. Overnight in tents near Upis (4,400 m).
Meals: Lunch, dinner.
Day 2: Upis – Arapa Pass – Pucacocha Lagoon
After breakfast, we hike toward Arapa Pass (4,850 m), with panoramic views of snow-covered peaks. We then descend through colorful valleys dotted with alpacas until we reach Pucacocha, a beautiful glacier-fed lagoon where we camp for the night. Keep your camera ready — the reflection of the mountain in the water is unforgettable.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 3: Pucacocha – Palomani Pass – Huchuy Phinaya
Today we conquer the highest point of the trek: Palomani Pass at 5,200 m (17,060 ft). It’s a challenging ascent, but you’ll be rewarded with some of the most spectacular views of the entire Andes. After celebrating at the top, we descend into a remote valley and walk toward our campsite near Huchuy Phinaya, a peaceful spot surrounded by vast Andean scenery.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 4: Huchuy Phinaya – Jampa Pass – Pacchanta
After breakfast, we ascend again to reach Jampa Pass (5,070 m), our final high mountain crossing. The descent takes us through spectacular high plains and eventually down to the village of Pacchanta, where we celebrate the end of the trek by soaking in natural hot springs. Final night camping or optional homestay.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 5: Pacchanta – Tinki – Cusco
A relaxed morning walk takes us back to Tinki, where our transport will be waiting. We enjoy a final lunch en route and return to Cusco, arriving in the late afternoon.

The Ausangate Trek is a high-altitude adventure — not technical, but physically demanding. Good acclimatization (2–3 days in Cusco) is essential. Nights can be extremely cold, so bring proper winter gear. This trek is off the beaten path — you won’t find crowds here, only silence, sacred mountains, and deep cultural landscapes. Ideal between May and October (dry season).
